JP2010 - Kinkakuji

Kinkakuji, or Golden Pavilion, is a World Heritage-listed Zen temple in Kyoto, where the top two floors are completely covered in gold leaf.

Officially known as Rokuonji, the temple used to be a retirement villa of Kyoto’s shogun, Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. It was later converted into a Zen temple after his death in 1408.

However, due to the civil war and fire, the structure were rebuilt several times, with the latest in 1955.

In 1994, Kinkakuji along with 16 other properties in Kyoto were inscribed as a World Heritage Site.
