AU2012 - Hanoi Vietnamese

Conveniently located next to the Wollongong train station, Hanoi Vietnamese is quite popular for something quick and cheap.

That is, if you don’t mind the Westernised Asian food of rice or noodles, mixed with meat and sauce. Examples include Lemon Chicken …

… Sweet and Sour Pork …

… and Mongolian Chicken.

Other than the rice paper rolls, looks like Hanoi is a Vietnamese takeaway that is not quite Vietnamese!!

TH2012 - Coconut Jelly

The “mak kraau buun”, which literally translates to coconut jelly in Thai is one of the famous must eat desserts at the Malaysian-Thai border.

And of course, the best place to purchase it is not at the border, but at the shop in Sadao that makes it daily.

Can be a delicious souvenir for family and friends too!!

TH2012 - Hat Yai’s Street Food

I suppose, the best way to enjoy local food in Asian countries is through their street stalls.

And in Hat Yai, there are just too many to choose from, with some looking quite hygienic, but some not so.

Among the best stalls that we encountered during our trip are  Fragrant Baked Coconut’s motorcycle parked right in front of Hat Yai’s Market …

… and Rabiah’s cart located at the entrance of Lee Gardens Plaza.

Both coconuts and mango sticky rice are definitely something not to be missed!!

TH2012 - Gelate

With over 20 stores and growing, Gelate is proving itself to be Thailand’s favourite outlet for homemade Italian gelato.

I guess, with their distinctive store design and attractive gelato colours, it is actually quite hard to resist!!

And with 32 flavours to choose from, it was also quite a tough decision to make. So, I decided to go for the Cappuccino gelato!!

Yummm…. definitely in love at first scoop!!

TH2012 - Log Terrace

One of the more touristy places to eat at Hat Yai is Log Terrace Restaurant. Built along a river with a cave theme, customers can opt to dine outdoors by the river or inside the cave.

Interestingly, this is also my first time seeing a dedicated “Sheman” toilet.

As for the food,  we decided to try the Pineapple Fried Rice with Meat Floss, …

… Seafood Otak Otak, …

… Fried Foo Yong Egg, …

… Roast Pork Knuckle, …

… and Stir-fried Vegetables.

Nothing to shout about in terms of food.

But in terms of service, they may need to improve a little. Although the restaurant looked pretty empty, it took them ages to serve the dishes. Another down side of Log Terrace is, the resident mosquitoes.

Luckily, there is an abundance of mosquito coils all over the restaurant!!
