JP2012 - Kiyomizudera

Founded in 780 on the site of the Otowa Waterfall, Kiyomizudera temple is best known for its wooden stage that juts out from its main hall, 13 meters above the hillside below.

Both the wooden stage and the main hall were built without the use of nails.

This impressive temple was added to the list of UNESCO world heritage sites in 1994.

The stage affords visitors a nice view of the city of Kyoto in the distance.

At the base of the temple is the Otowa Waterfall that is divided into three separate streams. It is said that by drinking the water from each stream, one would be granted with different benefits, namely longevity, career and love.

However, do not drink from all three streams as that is considered extremely greedy!!
