JP2012 - Pontocho

A narrow alley running between the busy Shijo-dori and Sanjo-dori, Pontocho is one of Kyoto's most atmospheric dining areas. Options include the inexpensive yakitori, traditional and modern Kyoto cuisine and highly exclusive establishments that require the right connections and a fat wallet.

Like the nearby Gion, Pontocho is also widely known for geisha, and is home to many geisha houses and traditional tea houses.

So, if you are lucky, you may bumped into a Geiko or Maiko while walking down the Pontocho.

Today the area, lit by traditional lanterns at night, is famous for the preservation of traditional architecture and traditional entertainment, with a mix of expensive restaurants, tea houses, brothels, and bars.

Ironically, I actually saw more geikos at Arashiyama than in Pontocho or Gion.
