MY2011 - Pao Xiang Bah Kut Teh

According to Wikipedia, Klang is believed to be the birth place of the first ever commercialised Bak Kut Teh in Malaysia. And due to the synonymity of Klang and Bak Kut Teh, a visit to Klang Valley must of course include a taste of this local delicacy.

Although located only 32km west of Kuala Lumpur, one doesn’t have to travel far as Pao Xiang Bah Kut Teh now brings Klang’s famous dish into major shopping malls like 1 Utama, Pavilion KL and Mid Valley Megamall.

However, unlike the traditional Bak Kut Teh where everything is mixed into a huge bowl, Pao Xiang follows the business concept of “One bowl of Bah Kut Teh, one bowl of rice”.

Thus, all their servings come in little Jigong bowls (a bowl with traditional cockerel motif commonly used in the Qing Dynasty), accentuating the flavours to match the traditional interiors of the store. Like how we would normally enjoy a Bak Kut Teh meal, during our visit, we ordered the Sum Chan Bah ...

… Teng Kia …

… Stomach …

… and Sui Kut Tao as ingredients.

For the health conscious, I am sure they will be glad to know that excessive fat and oil from the meat have been extracted throughout the cooking process by tying the meat with a cotton string. Thus, one doesn’t have to worry about the oiliness or fattiness of the dish.

But if that’s not convincing enough, the meal could always be accompanied by a plate of steamed vegetables to balance out the oil consumed.
