AU2010 - Flavours of Malaysia @ Grace Brasserie

As part of the month long Crave Sydney International Food Festival, Grace Brasserie brought the essence of Malaysia to Sydney by offering authentic Malaysian cuisine from top chefs, specially flown in from Kuala Lumpur.

Claiming to offer a true taste of Malaysia with several cooking styles, ranging from Mamak to Nyonya, …

… we decided to give the Flavours of Malaysia a try.

In order to truly Malaysianize the restaurant, rattan products, lanterns and Malaysian flags were used for decorations.

Even the waitresses were in traditional dresses!!

As soon as we were told to help ourselves with the buffet, we headed over to the salad bar.

Here, we were spoilt for choice with three types (chicken, bean sprouts and beef) of Kerabu (Mixed Salad with Herb), Ulam Campur (Assorted Salad), Rojak Buah (Mixed Fruit Salad with Prawn Paste), and Pasembor (Mixed Salad with Peanut sauce).

Rojak Buah

Pasembor, Chicken Kerabu and Sambal Telur

Next, we went for the soup section where the Sup Itik (Nyonya Salted Vegetable with Beancurd Duck Soup) was served.

Moving on to the mains, …

… again, we were spoilt for choice with the Kway Tiau Goreng (Fried Glass Noodles), Sambal Udang (Prawn Sambal), Kari Ikan (Fish Curry), Daging Masak Hitam (Beef with Dark Sauce) and Sambal Telur (Fried Eggs with Chili Sauce). White rice and Briyani rice were also provided as side dishes.

As part of the mains, the Grace Hotel (part of the Federal Hotels International) also offered a section called From Tunku’s Kitchen, which was a tribute to Malaysia’s first Prime Minister’s passion for food with the Kurma Kambing (Lamb Cooked with Spices and Coconut Milk) and Pajeri Terung (Brinjal with Curry Sauce).

Next up, our favourite section, also the most synonymous to Malaysia, was the Stall section …

… which offered the Roti Jala and Roti Canai with Chicken Diced Curry; Mee Rebus (Malay Noodles Soup); and Chicken and Beef Satays with Condiments.

Lastly, the most colourful and eye-catching section, desserts!! …

… where guests get to sample a range of cakes, sweets and fruits.

Ingredients for Sago Gula Melaka (??)

Ang Koo

Serawa Pisang (??)

A selection of kuihs and ondeh-ondehs

Malaysian beverages and specialities such as the Ais Kacang, Teh Tarik, Ais Bandung and Ros Sirap were also on offer, but unfortunately, we had to pay extra for those.

Halfway through the night, guests were also entertained by several traditional dance performances.

In addition to a night full of food and performances, all guests were also presented with a boarding pass …

… for their chance to win a return ticket to Malaysia (ex Sydney) and a 2 night stay at the Hotel Capitol Kuala Lumpur!!
