Among the 15 presidential memorials that honour the Past Presidents of the USA, the three that stood out are the Washington Monument, Jefferson Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial.
As the President who led the country through its toughest trial, the Civil War, it is no wonder that the Lincoln Memorial (1922) was constructed much earlier than Jefferson’s (1943).
But, at the same time, it also made me wonder, why only honour 15 Past Presidents (1st, 3rd, 7th, 16th, 18th, 20th, 25th, 26th, 28th, 29th, 31st, 33rd, 35th, 36th and 38th)? What happened to the rest?
Dedicated to Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the USA, the Greek Doric temple features inscriptions of two well-known speeches by Lincoln, “The Gettysburg Address” and the “Second Inaugural Address”.
Being one of the most famous monument in Washington, D.C., the Memorial is also often used as a gathering place for protests and political rallies.
The most notable was the March of Washington in 1963, when Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his speech “I have a dream”.
