MY2010 - Kek Lok Si Temple Display of Lights

The Kek Lok Si Temple (Penang Hokkien for "Temple of Supreme Bliss") is a Buddhist temple situated in Air Itam in Penang and is one of the best known temples on the island. While we were driving around Penang, we decided to give the temple a visit. Unexpectedly, it was the official opening ceremony of the Display of Lights event at Kek Lok Si, which later explained the heavy traffic jam and limited parking space.

As a result, we had to drive all the way up hill towards the Air Itam dam for a U-turn. From there, we managed to see and hear the fireworks that were lighted off for the opening ceremony. I guess the only disappointment was the sky was too bright for the fireworks.

The Display of Lights event coincides with the Chinese New Year celebration, where thousands of devotees turned up for the annual lighting ceremony. The whole temple will be light up every night to symbolize peace, luck and prosperity. It is estimated that approximately 230,000 light bulbs and 10,000 lanterns are used for the lighting.

It is also said that the lighting at the temple for the consecutive 33 nights during the Chinese New Year made this 120 year old temple one of Asia's most beautiful temple, …

… where the thousands of lights turn the scenery into a sea of light.
