MY2012 - Fatty Loh Chicken Rice

Voted as the “King of Chicken Rice” in Guang Ming King of Hainanese Chicken Rice Trophy Challenge, Fatty Loh is one of the most popular places for chicken rice in Penang.

Once operated in a shack that has given way to development, this over 30 year old establishment had since moved to a shop with a $20,000 statue for the Fatty Loh moniker.

Unlike a normal restaurant, customers are expected to order at the stalls before being seated.

Since they were voted the King of Chicken Rice, of course, we had to try their chicken.

In addition, we also had the roast pork and BBQ pork.

With that, came our complimentary soup and rice.

Although they were also known as the “Champion of North Malaysia” (as shown on the plaque), …

… I reckon that they did poorly with the chicken, compared to Taiping’s Kok Beng, which is also one of the top 20 King of Hainanese chicken rice in Malaysia (note: Taiping is also part of North Malaysia). I guess, the only dish that could probably win over Kok Beng is their roast pork.

But the highlight of my visit, also the funniest moment for me, was the waitress’ shocked reaction when I told her that I want a takeaway with the roast and BBQ pork only, and without the chicken!! Maybe I was the first customer to say that? LOL!!!
