Since its our free and easy day in Rotorua, we decided to explore the region with a day trip to the small township of Waitomo.
Waitomo Township
Hidden below the rolling hills and grazing sheeps, a labyrinth of caves awaits exploration at Waitomo. Here, we get to try black water rafting or more famously known as Tumu Tumu Toobing.
The trip combines the best elements of black water rafting with walking, climbing, swimming and tubing through distinctive sections of the TumuTumu Cave. Along the journey, we also get to see awesome cave formations and New Zealand’s famous and unique glowworms.

Along the drive to the caves, we were also treated with spectacular greeneries.

After the tiring caving and black water tubing, we were back to Rotorua to check out the Skyline Complex.
Skyline Complex
Initially planning to go luging, we were disappointed to be informed that due to the wet weather condition, the tracks were closed early. As a result, we decided to check out Rainbow Springs instead, which fortunately, is located next to the Skyline Complex.
Rainbow Springs
Rainbow Springs Nature Park offers a rare glimpse of a large range of trout, which are found in numerous pools throughout the park and illustrate the growth and life cycle of the fish. These are attractively located amongst native forest by following a winding path between the pools.

Rainbow Springs also showcases lizards and other reptiles that were found around the area.

Although Kiwi Encounter is located across from Rainbow Springs, …
Kiwi Encounter
… we get to save several dollars as Rainbow Springs also incorporates a kiwi house within its compound, where we get to see a real life Kiwi bird during its nocturnal hours.

After all the activities today, nothing is more relaxing than soaking in the natural thermally heated waters under the stars in our very own private hot tub.
