AU2012 - House of Thai

It seems that Baan Krua Thai have just had a management change, and the uniquely-housed restaurant is now known as The House of Thai.

After browsing through their menu, we decided to try two of their Chef’s Specialties. First up is the Roti Chicken Green Curry.

Unknowingly, it was just a slice of roti pratha, commonly found in Asian groceries, served with green curry. I reckon that it would have tasted better if they had served it with red curry. Then came the BBQ Chicken, …

… marinated grilled chicken fillets in garlic and black pepper served with steamed mixed vegetables and homemade chilli sauce.

Accompanying the Chef’s Specialties is the Seafood Salad.

I actually think that the chef did a better job with the salad than the specialties. LOL!!

But I guess, what stood out the most between this restaurant and the rest in Wollongong is the provision of a stand for rice. While that is quite common in Asia, it is quite rare to see that being implemented in Australia.

AU2012 - White Lotus

I often hear that White Lotus is considered the most authentic Thai restaurant in Wollongong. Although it had existed for quite some time, it is only recently that we have the chance to try this restaurant out.

Due to its hidden location, the restaurant is relatively quiet. But we can’t ignore the fact that White Lotus is pretty famous for its takeaways, especially with the endless phone calls ringing the whole night.

While there, we tried the must-have Tom Yum Goong, …

… Red Curry Beef, …

… Mixed Vege with Satay Sauce, …

… Oyster Sauce Chicken, …

… Cashew Nut Chicken, …

… Garlic and Ginger Duck, …

… and Sweet and Sour Pork.

The verdict, other than the Tom Yum and Curry, I am not exactly sure how to relate carrots and cabbages (literally appeared in every dish) with authentic Thai food.

AU2012 - The Asian Take Away

In addition to the “so-called Chinese” takeaway food, like the BBQ Chicken …

… and the Black Pepper Chicken …

… the aptly named Asian Take Away in Gwynneville also serves something more authentic.

For example, the Five Spice Eggs and the Five Spice Beef.

At $8.00 per dish, they are definitely a bargain for everyone!!

AU2012 - Sassy’s Red

Styled as an olden day coffee shop, Sassy’s Red is about bringing the nostalgia out of every Malaysian. As described by owner Simon Goh, Sassy’s Red is a 70s Malaysian Coffee Shop obsessed with jazz.

The contact details of the restaurant is even printed as old movie tickets!!

Besides the complicated-looking menu located high up behind the cashier, another eye catching decoration is the rack, which is full of sauce bottles.

But that is about where the good things end for Sassy’s.

During our visit, we decided to try their Special Fried Rice and Mee Goreng.

Not exactly sure what’s so special about their plain and oily Fried Rice, but their Mee Goreng was definitely special …

… especially with egg shells as an added ingredient!!

AU2012 - iSweety House

With durian’s odour described as rotten onions and gym socks, also possibly being considered as the smelliest fruit in the world, we were actually quite surprised to learn that iSweety House serves them as desserts.

And of course, we just had to choose the weirdest dessert ever that involves durian.

So, we went for the combination of Mango and Pomelo in Durian Juice.

While the durian juice, mango and ice cream were refreshing, the pomelo was way too bitter. Definitely a terrible combination, LOL!!!
